TASC is responsible for the development of appropriate standards, the accreditation of courses, and the assessment and certification of student achievement in senior secondary schooling across all educational sectors in Tasmania.

  • Accredit courses for senior secondary education in Tasmania.
  • Ensure that certification of qualifications meets approved standards.
  • Provide advice to the Minister for Education on matters relating to senior secondary qualifications.
  • Guide strategic planning for senior secondary qualifications management.
  • Conduct and moderate assessment of TASC accredited senior secondary courses.
  • Provide statements of qualifications, for example, the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE).
  • Collect and manage data on senior secondary, vocational education and training (VET) and higher education in Tasmania.
  • Provide system level data to Australian and state authorities as required, and in accordance with AQTF and CRICOS requirements and national protocols for higher education.
  • Recognise and register providers of non-university higher education and vocational education and training.

Review of decisions

TASC is currently reviewing or developing our internal review process for decisions. The TASC Act specifies the following TASC decisions may be reviewed by applying to the Magistrates Court (Administrative Appeals Division) for a review of that decision:

A refusal to –

  • accredit a course as an accredited senior secondary course or to renew the accreditation of such a course
  • accredit a course as an accredited higher education course or to renew the accreditation of such a course
  • approve a course as an approved overseas higher education course or to renew the approval of such a course
  • accredit a course of study as an accredited other education course or to renew the accreditation of such a course of study
  • accredit an education program as an accredited education program or to renew the accreditation of such a program
  • register a person as a registered higher education provider or to renew the registration of a registered higher education provider
  • approve an overseas higher education institute as an approved overseas higher education provider or to renew the approval of an approved overseas higher education provider
  • grant to a person the status of a self-accrediting higher education provider or to renew the grant of status of a self-accrediting higher education provider
  • register a person as a registered education (overseas students) provider or to renew the registration of a registered education (overseas students) provider

The cancellation of the –

  • accreditation of an accredited senior secondary course
  • accreditation of an accredited higher education course
  • approval of an approved overseas higher education course
  • accreditation of an accredited other education course
  • accreditation of an accredited education program

The cancellation or suspension of the –

  • registration of a registered higher education provider
  • approval of an approved overseas higher education provider
  • grant of status as self-accrediting higher education provider of a self-accrediting higher education provider
  • registration of a registered education (overseas students) provider

A decision under the Act or any other Act that is prescribed by the regulations to be a decision which may be reviewed.
