Review of TASC decisions

We encourage open, respectful communication and aim to resolve issues as quickly and fairly as possible.

We understand that issues about assessments, results and qualifications can feel stressful. We will take your concerns seriously and respond with care.

TASC must act within our legislative responsibilities. This means we can only review or make decisions on matters we are responsible for. We also need to ensure our decisions are fair and do not create an unfair advantage or disadvantage compared to other students.

What we will do

We will:

  • Treat all requests seriously and respectfully
  • Listen to your concerns and consider the outcome you are seeking
  • Keep you informed of progress
  • Aim to resolve matters promptly and fairly.

We ask that you engage with us in good faith and communicate respectfully throughout the process.

Steps to raise concerns and request a review:

The best place to start is with the person or team involved:

  • Share your concern clearly and respectfully.
  • Tell us what outcome or action you would like to see – this helps us understand your expectations. (For example; an explanation, an apology, a change to a process or service, or a review of a decision.)
  • Give the team an opportunity to respond and work with you on a solution.

We aim to respond promptly. At busy times of the year (such as exam periods and results release), responses may take a little longer.

If the issue cannot be resolved directly, you can escalate it to a team leader or nominated contact officer:

  • Provide a brief written summary of the issue, the outcome you are seeking and the steps already taken.
  • The manager will review the matter and work with those involved to find a resolution.

For school and student matters, the school’s TASC Liaison Officer (TLO) will be involved to coordinate communication between the school and TASC.

If you remain dissatisfied, you can request a final internal review:

  • Before requesting a final review, you will need to have worked through Steps 1 and 2.
  • Include the outcome you are seeking in your request.
  • If accepted, a senior officer (such as the Deputy Director, TASC) will review the matter independently.
  • They may seek further information before making a final decision.

How to request a final internal review is provided at the end of Step 2.

The final decision will be communicated clearly and will conclude the process.

In most circumstances, the final internal review (Step 3) is the last step for review of a TASC decision.

If you think you have been treated unfairly or unreasonably by a Tasmanian public authority (including TASC) you can lodge a complaint with Ombudsman Tasmania.

Under the TASC Act, neither the Minister for Education or the Secretary of the Department for Children, Education and Young People may direct TASC in relation to an individual decision [Section 14. (2)].

The TASC Act [Part 6, Section 60) lists decisions that can be reviewed by applying to the Magistrates Court (Administrative Appeals Division). Decisions about senior secondary assessments and course results cannot be reviewed by the Magistrates Court.

Under the Act the following TASC decisions may be reviewed by applying to the Magistrates Court for a review of that decision:
