What is an unexpected result?
An unexpected result is an external assessment result that is substantially different from what you reasonably expected based on your achievement throughout the course.
For example:
- you achieved strong internal assessment results but received a significantly lower external assessment rating
- your final award was substantially lower than expected based on your internal ratings.
Why did I receive an unexpected result?
Internal assessment results are based on multiple assessment opportunities completed throughout the year, often with teacher guidance, reference materials and extended time frames.
External assessment results are based on performance in a single assessment event. Because these assessments occur under different conditions and measure performance at different points in time, it is not uncommon for a student’s internal and external results to differ.
Should I request an inspection?
An inspection may be appropriate if you believe your exam responses demonstrated a higher level of achievement than indicated by your external assessment result.
If you received an unexpected result and believe you performed well in the exam, discuss your result with your teacher before deciding whether to apply for an inspection.
You may also wish to apply for an administrative review to confirm that your result was processed correctly.
When not to use an inspection?
The inspection process cannot consider any issues that may have contributed to your exam result, such as the exam conditions or how you felt on the day.
Once results have been issued, it is generally not possible to review, investigate or resolve matters that were not raised at the time they occurred.
Issues arising during your studies or an exam were required to be raised with your school’s TASC Liaison Officer or the Exam Supervisor as soon as possible and before results were issued. If an illness, injury or emergency affected your performance, an application for a derived exam rating was required at the time.
What happens during the inspection?
During the 30 minute inspection, you will be given access to your written exam materials and have the opportunity to review your responses against the external assessment criteria in the course document. Where possible, additional information such as marking guidance for the exam will also be provided.
During the inspection, you may complete a submission form identifying the specific marking decisions that you believe should be reconsidered. Your submission must clearly explain how they relate to the external assessment criteria. The Marking Coordinator will consider only the specific matters raised in your submission. You cannot request a full re-mark of the exam paper.
It is strongly recommended that your course teacher attends the inspection with you. They can help you understand how your responses align with the external assessment criteria and assist in identifying any specific marking decisions that may warrant consideration by the Marking Coordinator.
Can I ask someone to come with me to the inspection?
Yes. It is strongly recommended that your course teacher attends the inspection with you. Only one experienced support person may attend in addition to you.
If your course teacher is unavailable, you should bring another experienced support person. An experienced support person is someone with recent experience of the course, such as a teacher or marker who has taught or marked the course within the last three years.
Speak with your school about who may be able to support you during the inspection.
Can I attend an inspection online or send someone on my behalf?
No. Inspections are conducted in person and must be attended by the student who sat the exam and submitted the application. A representative cannot attend on your behalf.
What happens after my inspection?
After the inspection, your submission form with any matters you have identified will be assessed by TASC. If you have indicated a matter for review, it will be sent to the Marking Coordinator for consideration.
The Marking Coordinator will review only the specific matters raised in your submission and consider them against the external assessment criteria and marking requirements.
If the Marking Coordinator determines that an amendment to the marking is warranted, your result will be amended. Where the amendment affects information reported on your results documents, updated results documentation will be issued. If no change is required, your original result will stand.
TASC will notify you of the outcome once the review of your submission has been completed.
What other ways can I get information or ask questions?
